Background & Methods

An observational study at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, using the same dataset as McAbee et al. (2023) to characterize the prevalence and risk factors of neonatal hypothermia among LBW infants. 254 LBW infants contributed 1,948 temperature readings. The study analysed rates of hypothermia by gestational age category, birth weight, and other clinical factors.

Key Results

Outcome / MetricBEMPU Groupp-value
LBW infants with ≥1 hypothermic episode85.8%—
Extremely preterm infants with hypothermia100%—
  • 185.8% of LBW infants experienced at least one episode of hypothermia, confirming that hypothermia is near-universal in this population in Ghana.
  • 2100% of extremely preterm infants developed hypothermia, highlighting the most vulnerable subgroup.
  • 3The high burden of hypothermia in a tertiary teaching hospital setting underscores the inadequacy of standard care alone.
  • 4Risk factors identified included lower gestational age, lower birth weight, and time of birth.

Why This Matters

Together with McAbee et al. (2023), this paper provides a comprehensive epidemiological picture of neonatal hypothermia in Ghana's largest teaching hospital. The near-universal incidence data make a compelling public health case for systematic deployment of continuous monitoring devices like TempWatch in West African NICUs.
