UNICEF Pilot to Scale — From Three Communities to a National Model
Transforming Newborn Care in Benin
UNICEF Benin first piloted TempWatch in three communities of the ZoBoZa district in the Zou Department. The results were remarkable: 75% of mothers using TempWatch at home received hypothermia alerts, allowing them to act quickly to warm their babies before complications could develop.
The program showed measurable improvements in infant weight gain, with babies gaining an average of 669g in the first four weeks of life — a significant improvement over comparable groups without monitoring. Based on these results, the program was scaled to additional districts with support from the Belgian Embassy through Enabel (Belgian Development Agency).
From Pilot to Scale
The Benin program demonstrates the power of starting small, measuring impact, and scaling with evidence. UNICEF Benin's rigorous evaluation of the ZoBoZa pilot built the case for national expansion, supported by international development partnerships.

On the Ground: A Midwife's Perspective
"Hermine, une sage-femme dédiée au bien-être des nouveau-nés au Bénin" — UNICEF Benin profiled midwife Hermine, who has become a champion for TempWatch in her district, using the device daily to protect newborns and train other health workers.
Fitting a TempWatch bracelet is quick and simple enough that midwives like Hermine kept it going even through COVID-19, when many other newborn care visits had to be scaled back.

BEMPU's TempWatch was named directly as a case study in UNICEF's Global Annual Results Report 2020, under Goal Area 1, "Every child survives and thrives" — describing the Zoboza district program as a "game-changer" that helped cut newborn deaths from nine to two per year.
