Overview

BEMPU Health won Reckitt's MNCH Tech Accelerator Challenge, run as part of Reckitt's Banega Swasth India campaign and administered by PATH and Plan India. The award recognized BEMPU's newborn health innovations as part of the Self-Care for New Moms and Kids Under 5 program, and was presented on national television by actor Ayushmann Khurrana.

Following the award, Reckitt supported BEMPU in deploying TempWatch and KangaSling to a government hospital in Nandurbar, a semi-rural, tribal district in Maharashtra. BEMPU trained the Plan India team, who then cascaded hands-on training to SNCU doctors and nurses at Nandurbar District Hospital.

Project Activities

  • Online training for the Plan India team covering TempWatch, KangaSling, and BellyButton — device use, hypothermia risks, and step-by-step guidance
  • In-person, hands-on training cascaded to SNCU doctors and nurses at Nandurbar District Hospital
  • Demonstration and fitting of KangaSling for a mother practicing kangaroo mother care (KMC) with her baby

Beneficiary Story

On the day of the training, a mother was given a KangaSling to practice kangaroo mother care with her baby. She reported that the sling was very comfortable and made it significantly easier to maintain proper KMC positioning — enabling her to continue KMC more confidently and for longer durations.
